Walking Wednesday September 6, 2023

I’m hoping this is the last really hot week in a summer of really hot weeks. Walking has been pretty miserable, and everything is looking kind of dead. Thank goodness for audiobooks!

This week I’ve been switching between Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud by Shaun Considine and Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. Both are really good in different ways!

Another week of walks by the soccer field! I also started going back to the gym some mornings, but there’s nothing worth taking pictures of there.

My listen this week is Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii. It’s a bit out of my comfort zone, but I like that it’s written by six different authors.

School is back in session, and a lot of my walks are now taking place during various sports practices. As the kids get older the practices get later, and that works so much better for my schedule. Who are the people available to drive across town to drop their kids at soccer at 4 pm on a random weekday?

I’ve been listening to Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. This book gets a lot of hype, but it’s a little long for my tastes. Grateful that my library had it on audio so I wasn’t tempted to buy it.

Walking Wednesday August 16, 2023

It’s still as hot an humid as ever here, but there have been signs of fall on my walks. Bring on the sweater weather. I’m over this summer that seems to want to kill us all.

When walking I’ve been listening to A Bad Day For Sunshine by Darynda Jones. I love starting a new series!

Walking Wednesday July 12 2023

Holidays lead to out of the ordinary walking routes! I’ve been having a great time reminding myself of local attractions including the National Mall and early morning baseball games.

For audiobooks I’ve been alternating between The Outsider by Stephen King and Yellowface by R.F. Kuang.

Images of lilies around Alexandria, VA

I feel like I’m finally getting back in the swing of things after a few weird weeks. Of course it’s supposed to rain all week, but we need it, and there’s always the gym.

I found a new to me path this week which was beautiful until I saw three snakes. I’ll put that place on my winter only list. Lilies are in full bloom everywhere. Mine didn’t bloom last year, but this year they’re amazing.

I’ve been listening to Around The World in 50 Years. Parts are interesting, but the narrator has a new wife or girlfriend in every country and I find that suspect.

Walking Wednesday May 16, 2023

My walks are still a riot of color, but you can tell the heat will be here soon. Weeds are starting to appear, and the tougher flowers of summer are starting to show. I’m on a 13 day exercising/step count streak. It’s been years since I’ve been able to walk this much and I am so thrilled.

I’m about to start a re-listen to Stephen King’s Finders Keepers. I can’t wait for his new book Holly to come out later this year.

The roses and irises are out now. Every time a new flower blooms on my walks I think “These are my favorites!” Then something else blooms and I change my mind.

I started listening to Island Queen by Vanessa Riley last night at my daughter’s soccer tryouts. It’s slow going so far, but I haven’t listened to much. (Just noticed this is free on Kindle Unlimited if you want to give it a try.)

Walking Wednesday April 19, 2023

I’m late with this post today because I thought it was Tuesday. That shows you what kind of week it has been! I’ve been keeping up with my steps though. I even saw a herd of deer when I was helping with a stream clean up.

I’ve really been enjoying listening to The Widows of Malabar Hill. This is free on Audible right now.

Images from our trip to North Carolina

The kids were on Spring break so we spent the holiday in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It was cold and incredibly windy, but we made the most of it!

Most of my audiobook time was in the car this week. We’ve been listening to Great Expectations as a family. Read by Eddie Izzard!

A grid with images of flowers seen on my walks this week.

Despite snow last weekend the flowers are really starting to bloom around here now. Love to see it! I’ve been spending more and more time outside and less and less time in the gym. That’s as it should be!

I bailed on the Julia Child biography I was listening to, and have moved on to A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende.

Top left: perriwinkle flowers Top Right: plum flowers Bottom Left: interesting clouds Bottom right: ice from moss

We had a three day weekend which meant I actually got to go walking in the mountains! I used to do that every weekend, but now that my kids are older it’s harder to get away. It was so nice to be back. I also took a few walks in the neighborhood when work wasn’t so crazy I was glued to my chair all day. Soon it will be light at night again, and it will be much easier to fit these walks in!

I just started listening to Dearie by Bob Spitz. It’s a biography of Julia Child that my library had available in the Libby app.

Top left: mailbox Top Right: cars painted like dogs Bottom left: Pansies peeking out of some dead leaves Bottom right: the start of my spring garden (carrots, mesculin mix, and cilantro)

Seems like we’re not going to get much of a winter this year, so I am embracing spring. Flowers are poking out on my walks, and I started putting a few seeds in. I’d prefer sledding and hot chocolate, but this is nice too.

I’ve been listening to A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier. It’s a book made for walking and puttering.
